Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand. The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus – alexander Graham Bell.
Growing up, there were lots of stuffs we played and experimented with as kids, without knowing that we were actually handling Principles that control life. Take for instance, the case of getting a glass (mirror or microscope in many cases) which with proper manipulation as kids, we could use to focus the sun’s rays on a piece of paper until the paper is set on fire and burns. We were intrigued by this exercise and usually felt this sweet feeling of contentment only after the paper was ash. This experience is what I believe many of us can relate with but the lessons are usually lost to all but a few.
It is Zig Ziglar that said, ‘I don’t care how much power, brilliance or energy you have, if you don’t harness it and focus it on a specific target and hold it there, you’re never going to accomplish as much as your ability warrants’ and this is so true as using our mirror, sun ray and paper illustration, we will find out that no matter how hot the heat of the sun rays, if it is scattered and not focused with the skillful use of the mirror, the paper can never be made to catch fire.
Focus lights us up and sets us on fire for our goals.
I’m passionate about focus, because for a long time I was given to a lot of distractions – dangerous distractions. By this I mean a situation where by you’re not distracted from a good course with the option of a bad course (that makes for easy choice), but rather you’re distracted from a good course with the option of another or several seemingly good courses – now that’s dangerous distraction- because by having too many good courses as options to follow, it becomes very difficult to Follow-One-Course-Until-Succesful. This scenario I’m sure is the case with many of us and we go ahead to chasing all of these options at once, forfeiting the leverage we can get from focus.
However what has helped me are principles that has been shared and discussed in previous releases in this series, ‘SCORE THAT GOAL‘ which include having goals and writing such goals down. You can also move a step further in building your focus level and avoiding distractions by putting your written goals, strategy table and every other thing that’s related to your goals in a place where you get to see it regularly – I place mine on a board in my room, where I can feast my eyes on it and be reminded as I wake up and when I go to bed. This practise has been very effective in helping me stay focused on my goals by re-igniting my desire and reinforcing my motivation.
When you have a burning Yes inside your mind and heart around your most important priorities, You find the ability to say No more easily to distractions – Stephen Covey.
David Beckham in his playing days was so good at taking free kicks that ‘Bend it like Beckham’ became a phenomenon. When asked how he managed to achieve a high level of accuracy for his free kicks in sometimes very high level pressure situations; like scoring with almost the last kick of the game to qualify his country for the world cup, David had this to say, ‘I just put myself in the Zone.’
Focus shuts out the noise (distractions), puts you in the zone and leads you to amazing levels of performance.
Do you know that light (Yes, the same light you know) has the power to cut steel? All it needs is proper focus and cutting steel becomes a piece of cake as it’s being done today.
Concentrated attention (focus) is the collection of units of power on a chosen point of intention – James Arthur Ray.
Nothing is impossible for the man with a focus and like Bruce Lee said, ‘The successful warrior is the average man with laser like focus’.
I have included so many quotes not because I want you to know that I know so many quotes on focus, I got them from the internet and so can you. What is important is letting you see in the words of so many of these renowned people, the importance of focus and to help you make a decision to choose a path and follow through with it for you’re the director of your life, you chose where to put your focus and your focus shapes your life.
For if we say we know something and don’t do it, we actually don’t know it.
